Melbourne's east began life as a place of rural respite for well-to-do Melbournites and 'gentleman farmers'. Camberwell was a country escape, whilst Blackburn was known for fresh air and for creating the best brickworks in Melbourne.

To think of Balwyn was to think of home made wines and farming plots, and to think of Doncaster was to consider a tourist destination renowned for its orchards and hill.

A past now barely recognisable in terms of open space, but a history easily mirrored by the grand homes, leafy streets and personality of today's east.

Over a century of population booms, points of growth in Melbourne's economy, and the development of transport and roads has seen the eastern suburbs become sought after for residential of transport and roads has seen the eastern suburbs become sought after for residential developments.

Subdivided farming areas began to draw excellent prices once WWI was over, then transportation from the city and the development of roads to the area further boosted its appeal. These days, what were then rural, outer suburbs are now highly desired inner suburbs.
