MEGAN EVANS: PARLOUR
Wed 23 May to Sun 24 Jun

The Lindsay Family Parlour has been a permanent feature of the Gallery since 1967, when it was created to house objects and furniture from the Creswick home of the Lindsay family of artists. Artist Megan Evans will take over this classic Victorian space, inserting her family portraits and her dismembered furniture into the, replacing much of the Lindsay family memorabilia with her own.

Parlour follows Evans’s successful exhibition with Peter Waples Crowe Squatters and Savages, which was presented in Ballarat and Benalla in 2017. Much of Evans’s current practice involves combining original 19th century heritage objects including photographs, furniture and decorative arts with craft processes such as beading and needlepoint.

The processes employed in this work, symbolic of both personal and universal histories, are combined to unsettle traditional understandings of ownership, memory and identity. By placing them in a classic Victorian environment the work can be seen in context, unstitching our understanding of a ‘civilised’ past.

Evans will activate the installation dressed in a replica of her great grandmother’s dress during Ballarat Heritage Weekend, Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 May, at 10.30, 1pm and 3pm both days.

She will also present an Artist Talk on Saturday 2 June at 2pm.

Parlour is not intended as a reflection or comment on members of the Lindsay family, their personal histories or artistic practice, but takes advantage of the installation of a typical nineteenth parlour in a gallery context.
