Feed Melbourne | FareShare
Each year FareShare, Leader Community Newspapers and the Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation encourage Melburnians to donate to The Feed Melbourne Appeal. All donations of $2 and more are tax deductible, and donations up to $225,000 will be matched by the Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation. Articles appear in all 33 Leader newspapers and events are held across Melbourne.
Every single dollar donated to the Feed Melbourne Appeal goes to a food charity.
The Feed Melbourne Appeal is an annual fundraising appeal conducted by Leader Community Newspapers, FareShare, and the Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation. Every dollar raised by the appeal helps individuals and families in Melbourne who are struggling with food insecurity.
Through Leader Newspapers, we call on the community to join us in the fight against hunger and malnutrition in Victoria and donate to the Feed Melbourne Appeal. All donations made to the Feed Melbourne Appeal are banked and receipted by the Lord Mayor's Charitable Foundation, Australia's largest community foundation. The Foundation doubles the impact of your gift, by matching donations dollar-for-dollar, up to $250,000.
Local food charities are encouraged to apply to the Foundation for a Feed Melbourne Appeal grant of up to $15,000. These grants allow charities to purchase vital infrastructure items and low-cost staple food stock to meet the increasing demand for meals or food hampers in their community. Bulk food orders and expensive items such as fridges, freezers and vans needed to cook, prepare and distribute food, are often beyond the reach of small cash-poor organisations.
The Feed Melbourne Appeal grant applications are thoroughly assessed by a special grants advisory panel who allocate two thirds of the appeal's total revenue (all donations received donations plus the matching grant) to the programs that will make the greatest impact on food relief in Victoria.
The remaining third of the appeal revenue is allocated to Melbourne based food rescue charity and Appeal partner, FareShare, a community group that operates Australia's largest charity kitchen. FareShare work with businesses and supermarkets to rescue quality food destined for landfill and turn it into .. meals per year. FareShare cook, pack and distribute this food to charities across Victoria to feed people experiencing hardship.
FareShare is a community group that operates Australia's largest charity kitchen. FareShare works with businesses to collect surplus nutritious food, then with the help of 6,000 volunteers a year, cooks this rescued food into one million meals per annum. These meals are given free to over 400 Victorian charities helping people in need. FareShare is a nor-for-profit charity which receives no annual government funding.
