Environment Victoria is the state's peak non-government environment organisation. We have been campaigning across Victoria for more than 30 years, ever since the successful 1969 drive to save the Little Desert from subdivision.
Over recent decades households, farmers and businesses have made considerable efforts to lift their environmental performance.
However a range of indicators show that as a society we are continuing to damage the environment. Victoria's shocking track record on greenhouse pollution and the degraded state of our rivers and catchments threaten the very fabric of our environment and that of our society. And despite an increase in recycling efforts, the total amount of waste we produce in Victoria is growing by about 2% each year.
Accordingly, EV has decided to concentrate its efforts on global warming, preserving waterways and reducing waste. While these issues may form the core of our campaigning agenda, we have other important goals. As an environment group with a statewide focus we are dedicated to assisting local and regional environment groups working on issues of local or regional importance.
And of course that information and assistance flow is a two-way street - our member groups provide us with valuable local knowledge and grass roots information which in turn strengthens our campaigns. Our activities include lobbying government ministers and opposition MPs, pushing for better environmental legislation and increased funding for environment programs, and running a series of programs which empower individuals to reduce their environment impact.
As our understanding of our environment grows, so too does the complexity of the challenges we face in reducing our environmental footprint. No single government, environment group, consultant or business will offer all of the solutions. To make serious inroads into tackling global warming, river health and other challenges people from each of these sectors will need to work together, in good faith.
With your support, EV delivers proactive, positive results for Victoria's environment like:
- Securing a commitment to return flows to both the Snowy and the Murray Rivers
- Preserving land including Point Nepean and the Little Desert as public parks.
- Stopping pulp from native forests being used to make Kleenex tissues and toilet paper.

EV wins commitment to the Thomson River
Melbourne could become one of the first cities on Earth to have a sustainable water plan that protects our rivers and clean water supplies.
Victorian homes on a power trip
The average Victorian family wastes up to $570 a year on power and water bills, a new study has found. But this waste - almost half the average annual energy budget of $1300 - could be saved with little effort or cost.
Global warming alert: TAKE ACTION NOW
Environment Victoria welcomed today's announcement by the Commonwealth that it will Stop the expansion of Australia's worst polluting power station. Click the link below to send a message to Victoria's Premier Steve Bracks. Tell him not to allow a five year expansion to Hazelwood power station.
