Our Botanical Gardens
Established in 1887, these Benalla Botanical Gardens were designed in the formal style, laid out and curated by Mr Alfred Sangwell, a landscape gardner from Melbourne and were listed on the Register of the National Estate in 1995.
They are significant because much of their original layout remains intact and are notably unusual for their combination of ornamental gardens, with a large oval described as the most picturesque cricket ground in the country.
On display in the Museum is the original plan and large photographs of the gardens and five contrasting styles of dress worn during the period c1887 - c1950.
