Damian Broomhead: Seeing Things: Bennelong and Yemmerrawanne in England
Drawings by Damian Broomhead
In 1793, Bennelong and Yemmerrawanne sailed with Governor Phillip to England. They were the very first indigenous Australians to do so.
This exhibition of oil pastel drawings takes as its inspiration the period that the travellers spent in London and surrounds, in particular their visit to the Tower of London, where they saw exotic animals like tigers, lions and wolves as well as medieval armoury.
These colourful and energetic pictures take as their starting point references and accounts in the historical record, fragmented and partial as they may be.
Opening drinks October 10th 6-8pm.
