Information for the public

The Department of Health and Human Services is aware of cases of a novel coronavirus, referred to as 2019-nCoV, associated with Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China.

This virus can cause an infection in people, including a severe respiratory illness. As cases of this coronavirus have been reported in some other Chinese provinces and countries, anyone who has travelled recently to Wuhan City is asked to seek medical assistance if they develop flu-like symptoms.

Information for health services and general practitioners

The Department of Health and Human Services is asking health professionals across the sector to watch out for signs and symptoms of novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) infection in patients who may have travelled to areas affected by an emerging outbreak.

Most cases are currently associated with travel to Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China.

The following case definitions are now in place in Victoria and in active use by the department and health sector:

1. Confirmed case
A person tested for 2019-nCoV at the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory and found to have 2019-nCoV infection.

2. Suspected case
Both clinical and epidemiological criteria need to be met for a person to be classified as a suspected case.

Clinical criteria

fever or history of fever AND acute respiratory infection (shortness of breath or cough or sore throat)

OR

severe acute respiratory infection without fever requiring hospitalisation

AND

Epidemiological criteria

A history of being in Wuhan, China in the 14 days prior to symptom onset

OR

Close contact within 14 days of symptom onset with any of the following:

a confirmed or suspected case of 2019-nCoV;
a healthcare facility in China.
