Melbourne announces encore season of a ‘powerful and profound’ musical.

The breathtaking new musical COME FROM AWAY returns to Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre by popular demand in February 2021 for a strictly limited encore season.

WINNER! BEST MUSICAL ALL ACROSS NORTH AMERICA

The global phenomenon COME FROM AWAY has been lovingly embraced by Melbourne audiences, earning rave reviews and standing ovations since its Australian premiere in July 2019.

The musical tells the remarkable true story of thousands of stranded airline passengers and the small town of Gander in Newfoundland, Canada, that welcomed them. Cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but uneasiness turned into trust, music rallied everyone’s spirits, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships.

COME FROM AWAY is the most successful musical to be staged in the Comedy Theatre’s 92-year history. Producer Rodney Rigby said, “Come From Away has struck a deep chord with Melburnians and visitors, reflected in the incredible appetite for the work’s celebration of community spirit in the face of tragedy. I can honestly say that Melbourne people have truly taken Come From Away into their hearts.”

There are five productions playing concurrently throughout the world, including on Broadway where Come From Away celebrated its third anniversary on 12 March, at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, where it continues to play to capacity houses. The musical has won 46 international awards to date. In Melbourne alone it has won the Ticketmaster Ticket of the Year award for 2019, as well as the Drama Victoria award for Best Performance by a Theatre Company. It has received multiple nominations for the 2020 Green Room Awards, to be announced 30 March.

Review: The Herald Sun Digital Edition: Musical theatre at its best

Melbourne

Of all the jewels in the musical theatre crown, few shine as brightly as newcomer Come From Away.

Not only does it present a perfect example of how intricate and skilled musical theatre can be, it breaks the mould and moves the medium into new directions.

This is a musical with a lot to say about compassion, inclusion and goodness without being mawkish or losing a raw edge.

It is the reason musical theatre lovers appreciate the medium so much because, at its best, it is uplifting, joyous, moving and a fine display of musicality, writing and acting.

If you haven't heard of this show yet, you will, because it's the talk of the town. There are few spontaneous standing ovations in Melbourne but this deservedly has one every night.

In telling the story of how the people of Gander, a small town in Newfoundland, Canada , embraced almost 7000 passengers on planes diverted in the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, it could have been stuck in sadness.

But there is plenty of humour , liveliness and it glows with warmth at its core.

Book, music and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein are nuanced, accurate and full of spirit.

This slick, first-rate production is as good as the New York one but all the better because it is so far away from the original action but so close to the emotional impact.
