Andrew Wurster: Spotswood & Surrounds

Spotswood & Surrounds - Photography of Andrew Wurter

Andrew Wurster Photography Exhibition
June 1st- June 30th 2018
Thursday 4-9 Friday 12-11 Saturday 12-11 Sunday 12-9

I'm a Melbourne based photographer with an eye for composition. For over a decade I've explored the streets, lanes, rooftops and factories of Melbourne's west with his camera creating a carefully calculated set of typologies of various suburban, urban and industrial environments in Footscray, Yarraville, Seddon & Spotswood.

Watching the area evolve over the years and my love for the industrial aesthetic of the Two Birds Brewery (and very tasty beer) meant that I could hit Two Birds with one stone, to get a selection of prints.

The images have all been shot with the exhibition in mind, starting on January first this year.

It seems the rate of development and urban evolution is only ever accelerating, with old buildings coming down and new one coming up very quickly.

Characters of many of these former working neighbourhoods are changing so quickly as is most of the rest of Melbourne.

Seeing bars and cafes spring up and replace the older family businesses is a double edge sword, capturing this particular moment in the inner west feels like something I'll be doing on a very regular basis for a long time to come. Looking back at the photography of Mark Strizic, who documented post war Melbourne until he passed away only a few years ago, Is a major inspiration for me. His work captured the post war boom time when Melbourne underwent a major expansion in a similar way that we have done in the past fifteen or twenty years.
