Alzheimer's AustraliaAlzheimer's Australia is the peak body providing support and advocacy for the 321,600 Australians living with dementia.

Alzheimer's Australia administers leading edge national dementia programs and services funded by the Commonwealth as well as providing national policy and advocacy for the 321,600 Australians living with dementia.

National Programs

Alzheimer's Australia manages a wide range of innovative National Programs which provide information, support, counselling, training and education to people with dementia, their families and carers as well as to professionals working in the dementia field.

Many of these programs are funded by the Australian Government through the National Dementia Support Program (NDSP). Programs are delivered by individual Alzheimer's Australia Associations in each State and Territory.

The National Dementia Helpline

The National Dementia Helpline provides advice, information and referral to services and can be reached on 1800 100 500. If you are not sure about where to go for help or if you just want some information about dementia, the National Dementia Helpline should be the first call you make. The National Dementia Helpline can also assist if you are concerned about changes in your memory and are uncertain about what to do next.
Dementia and Memory Community Centres

Dementia and Memory Community Centres offer a range of services, including counselling, recreational activities, education courses, and library and information services.

The library service provides access to the latest publications, audio visual material and internet-based resources on dementia care, research and policy. These services are designed to help support and educate people with dementia and their carers.

Dementia and Memory Community Centres also run and coordinate a range of free activities and education courses throughout the year, ranging from arts and crafts activities, yoga and relaxation, to more formal information courses designed to help and educate family carers.
The Living with Memory Loss Program (LWML)

The Living with Memory Loss Program (LWML) provides people in the early stages of dementia and their families and carers with a specially tailored program of information, advice and peer support to assist them to come to terms with their condition and plan for the future.

Independent evaluation has shown that this program has a substantial effect on the well-being of those people who participate in the program. The LWML program is offered in a variety of locations throughout Australia and in a range of formats to meet people's individual needs.

Free counselling is available for people with dementia and their families and carers. Counselling provides an opportunity to discuss issues related to dementia confidentially with highly skilled and experienced counsellors.

Carer Support Groups

Carer Support groups provide an environment in which carers of people with dementia can discuss issues with other people in a similar situation in a safe and supportive environment. Carer support groups meet in a wide variety of locations throughout the country, contact us to find out if one operates in your local area.

Education for Family Carers and Workers

Alzheimer's Australia has been at the forefront in the development of nationally accredited dementia training competencies. Alzheimer's Australia's highly skilled educators offer specialised dementia training and education to families and carers of people with dementia and those who work with people with dementia. A wide variety of courses are on offer, including an accredited competency based course. Short courses on particular topics of interest are also provided.

Public Awareness Activities

Throughout the year Alzheimer's Australia delivers a range of seminars and other presentations to the community on dementia related subjects. Presentations on how to reduce your risk of dementia and the memory changes that naturally occur as people age have proved highly popular. Dementia Awareness Week, which runs in September, provides a focus for the year's public awareness activities and often features special workshops, lectures and other presentations.

National Resources Program

The National Resources Program creates an extensive range of high quality information resources on dementia topics. Our Help Sheets and Update Sheets are a leading and easily accessible source of information on dementia, tailored to meet the needs of people with dementia and their families and carers. Help sheets are available in a range of community languages.
