80/80. Eighty Years of SAM. The Collection

80/80. Eighty Years of SAM. The Collection

In 2016, SAM reaches a milestone, celebrating 80 years since the early beginnings of the Collection in 1936.

To mark this significant point, SAM is rehanging its permanent collection in the Museum’s downstairs galleries. This enables us to showcase some of the significant works and delightful treasures in SAM’s now sizeable collection, and reveal some of the trends that have emerged over its 80 year history.

This exhibition has been developed around a number of themes, including place and identity. Works featured include colonial images from Shepparton’s own past, to contemporary artists’ responses to country and place. Explorations of identity similarly range from academy portraiture traditions John Longstaff and others, to more contemporary examinations of a culturally diverse country that is part of a globalized world. The exhibition also features key works from SAM’s marvelous ceramics collection.

Works on show include ceramics by the Hermannsburg Potters and Ernabella artists, decorated platters and domestic wares by Merric Boyd and others in the Murrumbeena Circle, John Perceval’s slightly demonic looking Angel, and works and installations by contemporary artists who co-opt the potential of ceramics as part of broader contemporary artistic practice.
