RMIT - Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology

RMIT - Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology

After 95 years as Victoria's leading technological educator, and having offered degree courses for over 30 years, RMIT was granted formal university status under the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology Act 1992.

RMIT University is a university for tomorrow--our teaching, learning, research and innovation programs are continually updated so that our students, staff and graduates will be ready for whatever challenges the future brings.

At the same time, we have not forgotten our past. Since 1887 our inner-city campus has grown up with the City of Melbourne, from the 1880s boom through periods of war, depression and renewed prosperity during the latter half of the twentieth century. In the 1990s, as we acquired campuses in Bundoora and Brunswick, we have taken on an active role in developing suburban communities.

This 'heritage and history' site draws together articles, photographs and other material documenting RMIT University's strong presence in the social, cultural, scientific, business and artistic life of Melbourne and the State of Victoria.

RMIT is a university with a global focus. We are based in Melbourne where we have three main campuses and we undertake a wide range of teaching and research activities in Hamilton and East Gippsland in regional Victoria. If you need help finding your way around you can consult our Campuses and Sites information

We also offer many of our qualifications in collaboration with our more than 190 partner institutions around the world. Links with these universities and colleges also allow our students to participate in exchanges, study abroad programs and cooperative teaching and research programs.

We are a member of the Australian Technology Network (ATN), a powerful coalition of five leading Australian universities across the country which share a heritage of working with industry and a united vision for the future. We are also part of the Global University Alliance (GUA), a partnership of ten prestigious international universities, dedicated to providing students across the globe with accessible education using the latest interactive web and data-based technologies.

RMIT leads research and development in these key areas:

Information Technology and E-Commerce;
Advanced Manufacturing and Materials;
Health Improvement through Biotechnology and Drug Technology Development
Environmental Sustainability
Social (Urban and Regional) Development (including Design);
