JAZZ IT UP at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival

Read online..

I’ve done my fair share of talking this month in preparing this issue. Luckily it was with some really interesting and inspiring Melburnians and it’s a great privilege to feature these interviews in this May issue.

Following on from last month’s comedy festival joviality it’s time to get into the groove of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival with local and international acts performing across ten fabulous days. Artistic Director Michael Tortoni explains what’s in store at the festival which features some of the greatest jazz musicians of our time. I was also fortunate to talk with Joe Camilleri about the festival and his one night concert celebration of the music of Van Morrison.

Despite only four short years together, the 1960’s iconic band The Mamas and the Papas produced some of that era’s most memorable music. Award-winning Australian musical “Flowerchildren’ tells the story of the band and returns to the Comedy Theatre this May. Matt Hetherington reprises his role as Papa John Phillips in this must see musical that delivers the songs and delves behind their stories.

Costa Rolfe has written a great article reviewing the friendly neighbourhood rumble over the development of Fishermans Bend, clearly a highly sought after area which will require carefully considered planning by both state and local governments.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and UFC just seemed to me to be growing in popularity by the minute. I wanted to know more about the controversial world of cage fighting and what it takes to be the best. John Donehue seemed to be the right man with the right credentials to ask, read more on page 26.

There are some really great festivals on this May including the first ever Festival of Steve – designed to entertain, enlighten and inspire Melbourne’s marvellous modern men. For the ever increasing coffee aficionados in our midst, the Melbourne International Coffee Expo will brew some excitement as over fifty barista champions from across the world converge in Melbourne to compete for the coveted international title.

Last but certainly not least, it’s our 7th birthday this May so let’s get the party started!
