Optus unveils new broadband services

Optus today unveiled plans to slash the price and increase the data allowances of its high speed internet offering.

Optus said the changes included broadband price reductions of more than $30 a month, increases in broadband data allowances, a new plan for broadband first timers and price reductions for dial-up customers.

Optus Consumer and Multimedia managing director Martin Dalgleish said customers of the 6GB (gigabyte) plan would have their data allowance doubled and monthly subscription costs reduced to $69.95 a month from $99.95 a month.

Customers on the 3GB plan would have their data allowance increased by four times at no additional cost, while the 15GB offering would be reduced by $130, with an extra 5GB added.

"Existing customers will be automatically migrated to the new plans on 1 March with no change o their existing contract terms. New customers require only a 12-month commitment," Dalgleish said.

For first time customers, Optus has introduced a Starter 300MB plan for $49.95 a month.

"We expect the Starter plan to be very popular with people wishing to switch from dial up to broadband," Dalgleish said.

"For a few dollars more than dial up, customers can get 300MB which is double the average monthly downloads used by our dial up customer base."

Also under the changes, dial up customers would have their monthly fees reduced by $3.50.

Dalgleish said the new offers meant Optus would continue to gain market share.

"With our fast and reliable network and superior internet pricing and plans we expect Optus to continue to gain market share," he said.
