Livid Festival lifts roof off Rod's arena

October 13, 2003 - Melbourne's springtime finally revealed itself just in time to inspire 20,000 music fans to revel at the Livid Festival at Melbourne Park yesterday.

Organisers took no chances with the weather, moving the main stage indoors from the oval to the Rod Laver Arena.

This protected the sound from the wind, but the open roof allowed the sun to shine on people's faces while the bass thudded into their chests.

Festival-goers were treated to 60 international and Australian bands and DJs on five stages, as well as skateboarding demonstrations and freestyle street rapping.

Fans expressed themselves by dressing in tribes such as New York art punk or metalheads or by drawing anti-war slogans in chalk on the pavement.

The bill reflected the recent rock revival with a fast-paced volley of guitar bands led by The White Stripes, Linkin Park, Norwegian punk rockers Turbonegro and the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Local band Rocket Science received a rousing homecoming after a successful overseas tour; singer, Roman Tucker, provided the first big rock moment of the day by overturning his keyboard and the drum during a garage rock frenzy - an old chestnut that still thrilled the crowd.

Har Mar Superstar, a mulletted crooner Prince wannabe, made to look good by his aerobic dancers the Town Bikes, provided some respite from the heavy rock by gyrating on stage in his underpants, climbing around the arena and throwing a hissy fit at his roadies.

Melodramatic New York singer Karen O provided some rare femininity, prancing about in a pink tutu.

But she was a little more subdued than usual.

While the hottest band in the world at the moment, The White Stripes, did their best to fill out the Vodafone Arena with their raw minimalist sound and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes highlighted the neo-punk movement's lack of good songs by massacring old pop hits, hip hop acts Jurassic 5 and The Roots infected the crowds with good vibes and funky rhythms that had the crowd boogying late into the night.

A St John Ambulance spokesman said 40 people were treated for minor injuries such as exhaustion and the crowd was generally well behaved.

The Livid festival debuted at Melbourne Park last year after 14 years as a boutique, a Brisbane-only festival showcasing local talent.

While it sold out in its first year last year in Sydney, in Melbourne, it struggled for ticket sales.
