St Francis’ Church

St Francis’ Church

St Francis’ Church is the oldest Catholic Church in Victoria and the oldest church on its original site in Melbourne.

For over 160 years, St Francis’ has been an important place of prayer and worship in the centre of the city of Melbourne.

In 1929, St Francis’ Church became a eucharistic shrine in the care of the Blessed Sacrament Congregation.

A religious community of priests and brothers live in the monastery attached to St Francis’ Church. The St Francis’ community was the subject of the five-part television documentary Once Were Monks, which was broadcast on SBS Television in April 2000.

Today, St Francis is the busiest church in Australia, with forty-three masses and over 10,000 visiting worshippers each week.

Reconciliation (confession) is available in the church on most days of the week, and special masses are held each month for International Students, the Filipino Community and for people living with HIV (AIDS).

St Francis’ Choir sings throughout the year at the 11 am mass on Sundays.

The public are invited to join the Congregation in the morning and evening prayer of the church and to participate in regular devotions including the rosary and a weekly novena.

All are welcome to enjoy the hospitality of the Pastoral Centre adjacent to the church, where a priest is generally available for consultation (see advertised times).

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament for private prayer is available in the church each day, outside of masses and special services.
