Queens Birthday Weekend 2014

Queens Birthday Weekend 2014

The Queen's Birthday will be celebrated in Melbourne with a public holiday
over the weekend June 7-9, 2014.

Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary) was born on the 21 April 1926, is the constitutional monarch of 16 sovereign states, head of the Commonwealth of Nations, Supreme Governor of the Church of England and Defender of the Faith.

We were asked why do we celebrate the birthday in June, when the Queens birthday is in April? Australia has been celebrating the monarch's birthday since 1788, so maybe thats where the answer lies.

I read with interest where one writer said, with everything happening in April like Easter and Anzac Day, the powers that be decided it would be better suited to later in the year.

Interestingly, King George IV was the king in 1788 (1760 – 1820) and he was born on the 4 June 1738, so possibly the birthday commenced as a Kings Birthday Weekend.

The celebration of the Queen’s Birthday generally falls on the second Monday in June (except for Western Australia where the holiday is the first Monday of October).

It is also traditionally seen as the opening weekend of the snow season.
