Drive-In Cinema | Melbourne

On February 18 1954, an advertisement appeared in the Melbourne Sun: "Opening tonight at 6:30 Australia's first drive-in theater". The Skyline in Burwood became the first of more than 330 drive-ins that were built across Australia and changed the way Australians saw movies forever.

In 1966, there were 19 drive-ins cinema's in greater Melbourne (Melway's Melbourne map) to their peak of 60 throughout Victoria.

Not that they were everyones cup of tea, but for thousands of Melburnians they remain a fond nostalgia memory of our childhood.

TODAY

Melbourne has 3 surviving drive-in cinema's at Coburb, Dromana and the Lunar Drive-in Theatre in Dandenong which is the largest drive-in theatre in the Southern Hemisphere.

Coburg has three screens and space for 900 cars and has the widest screens in the Southern Hemisphere.

OUTDOOR CINEMA

There are now roof top cinemas plus a number of open air cinemas operating in the summer months including the Moonlight Cinema at the Botanical Gardens.
