Australian Domain Name Registrations

Australian Domain Name Registrations

In 2015, Australian .au Domain Name Registrations reached the magical 3 Million making .au domain name one of the top 10 most registered ccTLDs in the world.

Written on 28 July, 2015 by Emily Rice, .au Domain Name Registrations reach 3 Million explains the history of Australian Domain Name Registrations.

.au Domain Name Registrations reach 3 Million

It all began in 1986 when Jon Postel, operator of IANA, allocated the .au Top Level Domain Name to Kevin Robert Elz of Melbourne University.

Kevin was the architect of the original .au domain name eligiblity criteria, which required a direct connection between a company's official name and domain name. This criteria is still in use today. His efforts also helped Australia avoid a domain name gold rush in its early existence.

The early criteria

Fast forward to the mid 90s, and the self-regulatory body auDA (www.auda.org.au) is created to operate the .au Top Level Domain. In 2001, auDA issued an open tender for interested parties who wanted to implement and operate a secure registry system for the various Second-Level .au domains. Ausregistry was the successful party, and still operates the registry systems for the Second-Level .au domain names (now known as ARI Registry Services, who also operate .sydney and .melbourne domain names).

Now, nearly three decades after Kevin Robert Elz was allocated the .au Top Level domain name, Australia has reached over 3 million .au domain name registrations. As a result, our .au domain name is one of the top 10 most registered ccTLDs in the world.

Well done Australia!
